SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Four adults and six children are being helped by the American Red Corss after fire damaged a multi-family home in Springfield, Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to 31-33 Massachusetts Avenue in the city’s Mason Square neighborhood just after 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.
Springfield Fire Spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News the fire started on the exterior rear wall of the two-family home, near a porch. Leger said the cause of the fire appears to be suspicious and the arson and bomb squad will investigate how it started.
One firefighter was taken to Baystate Medical Center for an irregular heartbeat. Leger did not have an update on his condition. Two other occupants of the home were treated outside the home for smoke inhalation. Leger said it was very smoky at the fire and the people inhaled the smoke outside.
