NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Lowell Weicker, the last surviving member of the Senate Watergate committee, says that despite the scandal, Richard Nixon was a “pretty good president.”
Weicker said in an interview with The Day of New London that the 37th president passed many good measures in domestic policy. Saturday will mark the 40th anniversary of Nixon’s resignation.
Weicker, a Republican who was defeated in a 1988 re-election bid, said he initially was a fan of Nixon, who campaigned for him. He said he ended up not having great respect for him. The 83-year-old Weicker said Nixon trashed the Constitution.
Since the scandal that began with the burglary of the Democratic headquarters in Washington, Weicker said all elected officials have been open to scrutiny, perhaps to excess.
