SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Twelve people are homeless and a woman was killed from an early morning fire at 25-27 Converse Street in Springfield Sunday morning
Springfield Fire Department Spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News the fire started just before 4 Sunday morning. He said that when fire officials arrived, the fire had already burned through most of the second floor in the home. They also found a woman trapped on the roof and rescued her by taking her down a ladder. That’s when the woman allegedly told firefighters that there was a second person also in her apartment on the second floor.
When firefighters found that second woman, they gave her emergency CPR, but she had to be rushed by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center where she died.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause because it is considered a deadly fire.
The twelve residents affected by the fire are receiving help from the American Red Cross to find shelter, food and clothing.
