WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The School Committee in Worcester is proposing a unique way to bring in more money to fund their education system. They have asked their school department to consider selling advertisement space on the sides of school buses to bring in more money to educational programs.
The city’s superintendent said there are safety concerns; the ads could distract drivers while kids are trying to get on and off the school bus. West Springfield parent Tina Patnode told 22News she agrees with these concerns.
“If it’s something that’s going to benefit the educational system financially speaking, yes! But again there’s that safety hazard,” Patnode said. “I can visualize that in my mind because I have a 14 year old who has to cross the street to board the bus.”
Other concerns raised by school committee members in Worcester included disapproval that school transportation would become somewhat of a commercial enterprise.
