Protect your home while on vacation

34% of break-ins happen right at your front door

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Before you head off on vacation it’s important to leave your home protected. According to the FBI, one burglary occurs every 15 seconds in the United States.

Elizabeth Fox, who is vacationing in Springfield, told 22News, “It’s scary. Everything’s locked up but who knows what to expect when we get back home.”

The Burglary Prevention Council reports that 34% of break-ins happen right at your front door. That’s why it’s important to have a pick resistant deadbolt lock. At Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Springfield a deadbolt lock will run you about $33, and when you’re shopping, deadbolts come in different security grades.

Dewayne Kelly of Rocky’s Ace Hardware said, “Grade three is going to be your industrial grade, your commercial grade lock, which is going to be the highest ones we are selling around and that’s the one I would go with.”

First floor windows are the second most popular spot where burglars try and break in. One parent says that’s just one of the reasons why she wants to invest in a window alarm.

Amie Green of Springfield said, “My kids try to lean out the window, so it would even prevent them from going near the windows. So either way, in or out, it would work perfect.”

For just $17.99, General Electric offers a personal security window alarm that sounds the second someone opens your window. The FBI’s most recent report shows in total, victims of burglary lost around 4.7 billion dollars in 2012.
