Dog rescued after being found tied to a post

WATERFORD, Conn. (WTNH) —  It was along a fence at the Connecticut Humane Society in Waterford that the dog was tied Tuesday night.

The person who left the dog there used a green extension cord to tie her to the post, and she only had about two feet of slack to allow for movement. Waterford Animal Control officer Robert Yuchniuk says, “If, God forbid, some coyotes had come around, she wouldn’t have been able to defend herself.”

He was called to pick up the dog, which is believed to be a two-year-old boxer, at 1 a.m. Wednesday when a neighbor heard her barking. He says she should never have been abandoned this way, because there are legal ways to surrender an unwanted pet to the Humane Society, rescue groups or a local animal shelter.

“I am not happy. Abandoning an animal is a crime in the state of Connecticut. It’s an arrestable offense under the animal cruelty statutes,” says Yuchniuk.

Without any background on the dog, Yuchniuk doesn’t know what vaccinations she’s had or if she’s been spayed, important information in finding this good natured pup a new home. Yuchniuk says, “I understand people have hardships and need help. People like me are here to help them.”

He says in addition to trying to find the person who abandoned this dog, his job is to find the dog a new home.
