Boston Rd. re-opened to traffic after gas leak

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Boston Road is open again, following a gas leak that caused the evacuation of two businesses in front of the Haymarket Square shopping plaza.

Andrea Luppi, spokesperson for Columbia Gas, told 22News that a contractor had struck a service line running into the Bank of America in front of the plaza. Several businesses, including the bank, a shoe store, a tanning salon, and a Pizzeria Uno restaurant were evacuated, and Boston Road was completely shut down to all traffic up to the Wilbraham town line.

The roadway was reopened around 2:45, and workers and customers have been let back into both businesses.

Road crews are currently working on a major rehabilitation project on Boston Road in the area of the Eastfield Mall and Haymarket Square.
