Early morning house fire in Agawam

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP)- Firefighters are hoping that five cats were able to make it out of an Agawam home safely during a fire Wednesday morning.

Chief Alan Sirois of the Agawam Fire Department told 22News that just after 5:30 A.M., a passerby called 911 reporting smoke and fire coming from 41 Spencer Street. Firefighters arrived shortly after and were able to contain the flames and smoke within a half an hour, and did a thorough search of the home. No one was found inside, Chief Sirois said.

The chief said that a friend of the owner told firefighters that five cats were kept inside, but firefighters were unable to locate them, and the hope is that they were all able to make it outside beforehand.

Firefighters heard some ammunition popping in the fire, but Chief Sirois said its not uncommon and it is not particularly hazardous to them unless it is inside a loaded weapon. State and local police were also at the site of the fire.

Chief Sirois said that the house sustained extensive smoke damage, and no one is being let inside as the state fire marshal investigates the cause of the fire.
