How rare are morning tornadoes?

Most tornadoes occur during the mid to late afternoon and early evening.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Morning tornadoes are rare in the Bay State, but they can be just as dangerous. Revere’s tornado hit at 9:32 in the morning, lasting just 4 minutes and causing major damage.

Massachusetts has had 249 tornadoes from 1950 through April of this year. 14 of them have occurred in the last ten years (Through April 2014), but only 8.4% percent touched down in the morning.

Most Massachusetts tornadoes form between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. Two tornadoes in the past 3 days some residents concerned

“I was worried and I was concerned for the people and hopefully they’ll all get their lives back together over all of it and move on with life,” said Patricia Slattery from West Springfield.

Tornadoes typically form in the afternoon because that’s when instability is usually at it’s peak due to the heating of the day. Western Massachusetts’ June First tornadoes in 2011 formed between 3:17pm and 5:54pm.
