House pushes border plan

(NBC News) With time running out in Washington before Congress goes home on break, there’s a new proposal about how to fix the border crisis. It’s a small move, and short term, but Republicans are pushing it hard.

They propose spending $659 million, short term, just a sixth of the amount President Obama requested.

The plan would beef up security along the border using National Guard troops and end individual hearings for each migrant child.

Democrats are opposed, saying the hearing are a warranted protection for children in danger.

“Refugees fleeing crime, fleeing poverty and attempting to be reunited with their families,” said Rep. Luis Gutierrez.

A vote is expected this week, but even if the plan passes the House it will die in the Senate.
