Cats much more popular than dogs in MA, statistics show

Cats outnumber dogs by nearly 2:1 in Bay State

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – If you live in Massachusetts, there is a very good chance that you or someone in your life is crazy for their cat. Massachusetts pet owners happen to prefer cats over dogs, according to research from the American Veterinary Medical Association.

There are close to 1.6 million cats across the Commonwealth, compared to 850,000 dogs. That is the highest ratio of cats to dogs of any state in the country.

Mayreane Sullivan of Chicopee told 22News that she has always preferred large dogs, but since moving to Massachusetts, she has fallen for rescue cats.

“Less maintenance, they’re more affectionate, and they live longer,” Sullivan said. “I love my cats now and I wouldn’t give them up for the world.”

It looks like Massachusetts is regionally in good cat company. Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, and New Hampshire all ranked in the top-10 cat-loving states.
