CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Massachusetts state lottery tickets were sold at a record setting pace over the past twelve months. State Treasurer Steve Grossman estimates $971 million in profit. That’s $34 million more than expected.
One woman told 22News she thinks the influx in lottery sales is reflective of the local economy, and how more people are struggling to make some quick cash.
“The temptation, I’m going to take this gamble. And lots of people do that, they do it more and more and more and more. You know they want those things because it’s something quick and easy to do,” said Sharon Norwood.
The lottery awarded more than $3.5 billion in prizes over the past fiscal year, which is just slight less than the previous year.
