(NBC News) An Indiana teen who was trying to become the youngest to fly around the world in 30 days in a single engine plane died Wednesday in a crash off the coast of American Samoa.
The father and son team took off on their journey in mid-June to raise awareness and money for the Citizens Foundation.
“It was for a noble cause, it was for building schools, for kids in impoverished communities,” explained Azher Khan, a family friend.
The pair was able to raise more than half a million dollars for the cause along the way.
According to the Suleman family, the plane’s black box has not been recovered but investigators are able to hear its emergency pings.
