MARBLEHEAD, Mass. (WWLP) – The state medical examiner’s office is examining the body of a man from Westfield who died while scuba diving for scallops off the coast of Marblehead Tuesday morning. Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokesperson for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, says that 58 year-old Gregory Cole likely drowned while diving near Satan Rock; more than a mile and a half off the coast of the North Shore town.

Kimball Monahan told 22News that Cole was with two other men when the incident happened: another diver and a man who was aboard a boat. She says that around 10:15 A.M., the first diver came to the surface and as the man in the boat came to get him, he noticed Cole’s buoy moving about in the water in a way that indicated there might be a problem. When Cole didn’t surface, the man in the boat called the Marblehead Harbormaster for help.

The Essex DA’s office is still investigating the facts and circumstances leading up to Cole’s death, but Kimball Monahan says it’s not believed that the death was the result of any crime.
