SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Mass Appeal) – No one enjoys paying taxes, and local real estate taxes are no exception. What are real estate taxes?
Real estate taxes are property taxes authorized by state law with respect to real property.
Real estate taxes are assessed and collected by our cities and towns, and not by MA Department of Revenue.
The value of your real estate affects the taxes assessed with respect to the real estate.
Are there exemptions from these taxes that individuals may consider?
M.G.L. Chapter 59, Section 5, set forth exemptions that cities and taxes may give certain individuals who pay real estate taxes.
An exemption typically reduces one’s tax obligation.
Who are the individuals who may qualify for exemptions?
Veterans and Spouses
Individuals who are legally blind
What should one do to find out if one may qualify for an exemption?
Contact your assessor’s office of the city or town I which you own your real estate. They should be able to help you determine what exemptions are available for individuals and whether you may qualify, and procedures you would need to follow to obtain an exemption. One’s personal attorney might also be able to provide some guidance.
