Carol Ross hired for Amherst new initiative position

The position has been in the works for about two months

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – This position will serve as a liaison between the Town of Amherst and all its programs and the Amherst school system. The position title is “Media and Climate Communications Specialist” and the woman to do it is Carol Ross.

Town Manager John Musante told 22News they realized two months ago they needed someone to translate into actions their talking about more collaboration between the school system, five colleges, the town, neighborhood groups and businesses.

Ross said she’s never heard of this type of collaboration but thinks it’s going to solve problems and build pride. “Trying to identify what our needs are as a community and seeking answers and talking with people. A lot of people are already doing the work, so my job is to pull the people together and kind of glue things together and create an environment of collaboration.”

Musante said they will be looking at equity issues, inclusiveness, civility and respect.

22News asked if this was in response to racist speech at the high school this year. Musante said this program has been talked about for a long time.
