SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The two largest supermarket chains in western Massachusetts are announcing a recall of some organic fruit, due to the risk of listeria. Wawona Packing Company is recalling organic peaches, organic nectarines, organic plums, and organic pluots that were packed between June 1 and July 12 because of the possibility that those products were contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The produce was sold at Big Y and Stop & Shop stores.
Infection with listeria monocytogenes can cause diarrhea, vomiting, high fever, and severe headache, but it can be deadly, particularly for the elderly, the very young, and those with weakened immune systems.
