NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP-AP) — A man from Easthampton has been charged with using a hammer to assault two disabled women.
Gary Couchon, 59, was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty Monday to charges including attempted murder in connection with the alleged attack at about 9 p.m. Sunday. A dangerousness hearing was scheduled for Friday.
Easthampton Police Capt. Robert Alberti told 22News that Couchon broke into an apartment at 66 1/2 Maple Street, which his son was sub-letting to two women. The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that the woman told police they were disabled due to previous back injuries.
The women told police that he screamed at them, threatened to kill them, and swung a hammer at one woman, hitting her in the shoulder when she ducked. He also allegedly choked one woman.
The women called 911. They did not need to be taken to the hospital, Alberti said.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, Couchon is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a disabled person, and breaking and entering in the nighttime to commit a felony, Alberti said.
