SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Polka Mass on Saturday afternoon highlighted the 34th annual, 3 day Dozynki Polish-American Festival at Immaculate Conception Church in Indian Orchard.
Following a tradition that began many years ago in their Poland, the Polish-American parishioners conducted their Polka mass Saturday afternoon under a tent on the church grounds.
For generations Dozynki has been celebrated as a harvest festival. Event chairperson Barbara Wozniaktold 22News, the festival brings together current as well as former parishioners at the Polish church.
“We have a lot of families who come back and have moved out as they started families so they moved away, this is a timer for them to come back and live in the heritage where they started their foundations in their youth, the Polish-American tradition, it all brings it back to them to keep their heritage alive,” said Wozniak.
Organizers expect the 20,000 pierogies they prepared for the festival to be gone by Sunday the third and final day of the Dozynki Polish-American Festival.
