SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – On Saturday, Odres Nuevos organized a march against violence. They marched from Union Street to City Hall.
The group is particularly concerned about youth violence and they point to a rise in school drop outs and teenage pregnancy.
Pastor Angel Rivera told 22News what he thinks needs to be done to make the community a safer place.
“I was born a raised in Springfield. When I was a little kid the violence wasn’t that bad, we weren’t scared to step outside our door and go play at the park. Now, many people are scared,” said Pastor Rivera.
“That’s something that you don’t want to think about. You want to protect your kids. You want them to have a future. You want them to be safe,” said Leslie Rivera.
So far this year, there have been six homicides in the city of Springfield.
