SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News has new information on the increase in urgent care clinics around western Massachusetts.
Baystate Medical Center’s Dr. Niels Rathlev told 22News that wait times in hospitals depend on both the urgency of a patient’s problem, and also the number of trauma cases they’re dealing with at the time.
Baystate’s Emergency Department is the only “level one trauma center” in western Massachusetts that takes multiple trauma cases every day. It requires teams to work efficiently no matter how long the wait times.
“We also are the referral center for strokes and heart attacks and that also requires specialized teams who can at a moments notice come down and help out as well as mobilization in the emergency department,” said Dr. Rathlev.
Dr. Rathlev told 22News that, for the month of June, the average wait time at Baystate’s ER was 36 minutes.
