Historic Northampton playground demolished

20-year-old wooden playground demolished

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The iconic Jackson Street School playground was demolished on Saturday in Northampton.

Structural safety concerns had prompted the decision to tear down the more than 20-year-old Jackson Street School playground. Known as the wooden structure for its striking design, the playground had long been popular among Hampshire county families.

Lisa Boyle told 22News, “Well, I brought my son up with his friends and it was all being torn down. It’s been here for quite a while. I’m not sure if it’s safe or unsafe, they’re re-doing it hopefully, they’re going to build something else. For the kids, but it’s been quite awhile, it’s sad to see it go, a lot of work was put into it.”

22News was told they’re going to retain a small portion of the wooden structure for nostalgia sake.

Expansion of a nearby playground will help off set some of the loss of the Jackson Street School playground.
