HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Rep. Elizabeth Esty is hoping to honor the family members of fallen soldiers with a new postage stamp.

The Democrat came up with the idea for federal legislation after a recent meeting in Waterbury with a Vietnam veteran whose son died in Iraq a decade ago. Joe Nolan, a former Marine, suggested that Esty have a postage stamp created to pay tribute to the families.

Esty is working with California Republican Rep. Paul Cook on the legislation. They introduced the Support the Families of Fallen Heroes Semipostal Stamp Act on Friday.

Nolan said the stamp would spread awareness, saying “our country needs to know the cost of war.”

Proceeds from the stamp would help fund support programs for families at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
