LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Officials have not yet determined the cause of Thursday’s Lowell apartment fire, but there are ways you can prevent fire disaster in your own home.
The most important thing to do is check smoke detectors. A manager at Ace Hardware in Longmeadow told 22News that smoke detectors should be checked every month and during daylight savings.
Hardwire connections should also be tested. Some people who assume their detectors will always work don’t make an effort to check until they hear about a tragedy.
Bill Fiore of East Longmeadow told 22News, “With a tragedy with like what happens in Lowell occurs, it comes to the forefront, and then you think about it and then you forget about it sometimes. So maybe today’s the day to go check.”
Experts say detectors should be on every floor of your home and you can’t have too many.
