Veteran police chief dies, was a top cop 38 years

Savage served 28 years as Plaistow's chief

PLAISTOW, N.H. (AP) — The longtime police chief of Plaistow has died.

Gov. Maggie Hassan says in a news release she was sorry to hear of Police Chief Stephen Savage’s death Friday.

Savage served 28 years as Plaistow’s chief and was police chief of Haverhill for 10 years.

The governor praised him for his commitment to protecting others and helping make New Hampshire “one of the safest states in the nation.” She says her prayers are with his family and loved ones.

Plaistow Town Manager Sean Fitzgerald told the Eagle-Tribune the 68-year-old Savage had battled kidney cancer for three years. Fitzgerald said Savage was the second-longest serving police chief in the state.

The police department’s tactical training center was dedicated in Savage’s honor June 26.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
