Tree falls on home during storm

Tree smashed on to the second floor and the roof

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A tree fell on a home on Virginia Avenue late Wednesday night during a severe thunderstorm.

Homeowner Bill Moynihan told 22News he heard loud booms, like fireworks going off right by his house, and by the time he grabbed all his family members and looked back, a large tree had fallen on the roof.

The tree had come down from the neighbors yard through a fence and smashed on to the second floor of the Moynihan’s house around 10:30 p.m. He said the tree fell extremely close to a bedroom on the second floor. Everyone made it out of the home safely.

A building inspector will come out Thursday morning to assess damage, Sgt. Jay Gearing of the West Springfield Police Department said. Electricity has been shut off as a precautionary measure.

Moynihan told 22News his family bought the home less than one year ago. He expects his home insurance company to assess the damage as well.
