UMass among country’s most expensive public universities

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – A new list from the Department of Education reveals that UMass Amherst is one of the most expensive public universities in the country.

The college affordability study found that UMass students pay a net price of $18,156 a year. “Net price” measures how much an average undergraduate student pays after subtracting his or her scholarship and financial aid money.

The national average net price for a 4-year public school was $11,582.

Some parents are concerned there’s not enough financial help for families.

Deborah Colon of Springfield told 22News, “They’ll think twice to do it or not, or just go to a community college because it’s so expensive. And then, they’ll be in college studying but thinking oh my gosh, I need to pay all the loans.”

Miami University Oxford topped the list with $24,674 a year.
