Woman’s body found in Deerfield River

Search for woman missing while tubing not expected to continue

DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Chief Medical Examiner’s office is investigating the discovery of a body in the Deerfield River Tuesday morning.

Mary Carey, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, told 22News that the body of a woman was found by kayakers in the river near Deerfield Academy around 6:30 A.M.

Crews had been searching the Deerfield River upstream in Conway on Sunday and Monday for a woman who witnesses said became trapped in a whirlpool while tubing on the river. She has been described as being in her 20′s, and from out-of-state.

Franklin County residents, who’ve been tubing in the Deerfield Rriver for years, say you have to approach it with good judgement and preparation. “Go on one of the tubing tours that do this for a living. Be sure you’re a strong swimmer, confident you can swim against the current.”

Carey says that they will not release the identity of the woman found in the river until it can be conclusively determined by the medical examiner, but in light of Tuesday’s discovery, the search along the river for the missing tuber is not expected to continue.
