CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Summer time is generally thought to be a season where kids get to have time off and have a little fun, but for many families, summer times means a struggle to provide more meals for their child.
During the school year, many children receive meals through the School Breakfast Program or the National School Lunch Program, but have difficulty accessing healthy meals during the summer.
Parents say it can be a real struggle to provide. That’s where the Summer Food Service Program comes in.
It’s a federally-funded, state-administered program aimed at providing nutritious meals to low-income children and teens during the summer for free.
U.S. Representative Jim McGovern will be in Greenfield on Monday alongside Mayor Bill Martin to raise awareness for the program.
