Families celebrate in Chicopee to make up for wet holiday

Many parks were filled with activities this weekend

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Because the start of the holiday was such a wash out, enjoying the rest of this Fourth of July weekend went right down to the wire. 22News found plenty of 11th hour celebrating on Sunday at Chicopee Memorial State Park.

All roads seem to lead to where visitors would have been just as happy making this trek on Friday.

Families made certain their holiday weekend would include some swimming and as the sun beat down on this holiday gathering, others made certain to just take it easy on the beach.

Some had traveled some distance to end the holiday weekend in style.

Janet Schwartz of Westborough told 22News, “Actually we’re here for a big family reunion, little sister and brother in law in Springfield and that’s what we got finally, finally we got some good weather.”

There was a whole lot of picnicking going at the state park in Chicopee, just as it should during a glorious holiday weekend.

Like with so many of us, Roberto Otero’s original plans had been washed out, but as Otero and his family enjoyed the tail end of the weekend, he agreed it was all for the best.

“I guess sometimes plans change for the better so we’re enjoying ourselves here having a good time,” said Otero.

22News hopes that in spite of the soggy start to the holiday, you spent a worthwhile Fourth of July weekend.

The great weather that followed afforded many of us to enjoy activities at the many parks, picnic groves and waterways that provide summertime activities here in western Massachusetts.
