Springfield residents celebrate a belated holiday on Saturday

Great weather was something everyone talked about

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – What a difference the sunshine has made in the way western Massachusetts spends its Fourth of July weekend. 22News saw one of Springfield’s most popular beaches come alive on Saturday.

When the sun finally replaced days of wet weather, families came to enjoy taking a long delayed holiday at Five Mile Pond just off Boston Road in the Indian Orchard section of the city.

Another option was just spending Saturday taking it easy on the beach, but best of all for many enjoying the holiday was just having a barbecue picnic.

The great weather was something everyone talked about. Friday’s weather was something people would love to forget.

“Yesterday, Fourth of July, raining everything you know, but today is a nice day. We’ll be with family, cooking, eating,” said Solo Maldonado of Springfield.

“Of course beautiful today, yesterday was really out of control. The weather was no good. I had a lot of plans, lots of people took their days off,” said Felix Ortiz of Springfield.

If the weather continues the way it’s been on Saturday, we’ll be happy to simply look ahead to spending Sunday under the sun, enjoying good food with family and friends, perhaps soak up a few rays in the sand and most definitely, cool off in the pool, the pond or the lake.

This is the Fourth of July weekend the way it’s meant to be.
