The impact of fireworks on pets

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A lot of fireworks displays are going to be held Friday night in western Massachusetts, and while many of us enjoy watching the shows, our pets don’t like hearing it.

The loud noises can have a big impact on them. In fact, more pets are lost on Independence Day than any other day of the year.

“If you love your dog and care for your dog, do not bring them,” said Frank Borrero of Springfield. “They get scared, they get paranoid, heart pounding, and who knows what could happen with them? They could run off, bite somebody.”

22News is working for you tonight with these tips:

  • Make sure your pet is wearing the most current ID tag.
  • Never leave a pet alone.
  • Have a recent picture of your pet, just in case.
  • Play music or TV to drown out the fireworks sound.
  • Instead of coddling, play with your pet to distract him or her.
