Train car caught fire in Springfield

Train car will be brought to West Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A train car carrying recycled materials was burning in Springfield shortly after 6:00 Wednesday morning.

Springfield firefighters had the train move down the tracks to the area behind 1160 Bay Street, where water could be sprayed on the car.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield fire commissioner, told 22News that a CSX locomotive will bring the car to West Springfield where it will be disconnected and unloaded to finish putting out the fire.

According to Leger, the fire was caused by a mechanical problem on the train car.
