Search for a missing swimmer in the Westfield River called off

Search will resume at 8 o'clock Sunday morning

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The search for the missing swimmer in the Westfield River has been called off for the night.

Westfield Police got a call just before 5:30 Saturday night for a report of a person drowning in the river at the end of Hanover Street near the Great River Bridge.

Westfield Police officer John Blascak told 22News the Westfield Police, Fire Department, State Police Air Wing and State Police Dive team were searching the river with a helicopter, hovercraft, boats and people in the water.

He said people are not supposed to swim in that area, but they often do it anyway.

The darkness made it unsafe to continue the search for the night. It will begin again at 8 o’clock Sunday morning.
