AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – It might not always be convenient, but buying local, keeps money local.
Everything sold at All Things Local Co-Op in downtown Amherst is grown or made 30 miles or less from the store.
The store features everything from kale to eggs to milk and cheese, all grown in Western Massachusetts and sold in Western Massachusetts.
When we were there, beef jerky vendors were starting to sell their products. Their cows are from Shelburne Falls their jerky is made in Springfield.
They said it’s important to help the local economy.
Store manager Al Sax agreed, “We say shop local first. There’s gonna be some things you can’t get here. We don’t grow lemons and bananas in Massachusetts so I can’t get them in my store but you can buy locally first and you’ll keep your friends and neighbors and the whole local economy humming.”
Al said buying and selling local isn’t just important for his store, but for all stores in downtown Amherst and other Western Massachusetts communities.
The cooperative market also sells locally-made crafts like clothing, soap and dishes.
