WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – State Police, Holyoke Police and Westfield Police were involved in a a high speed pursuit of a vehicle through several Hampden County cities Wednesday night.
22News received several telephone calls from people who witnessed the chase including two 22News staffers.
22News Storm Team Meteorologist Ashley Baylor said six or seven cruisers were chasing the vehicle at very high speed on Homestead Avenue in Holyoke. She said a State Police Helicopter was also involved, flying very low, close to the ground.
Moments later, 22News anchor Rich Tettemer called to say he saw as many as 20 cruisers, some of them side-by-side on Route 202 chasing the car through Westfield toward the intersection of Routes 10 & 202.
He said it appeared the chase was over shortly after that at 6:45 p.m. because he saw several cruisers returning with their lights turned off, and the helicopter seemed to be flying off in another direction.
Westfield Police Lt. Jay Pitoniak confirmed for 22News that the chase ended in the vicinity of the Rt 202 & 10 intersection.
Lt. Pitoniak told 22News that the chase started with Holyoke Police, and was subsequently picked up by State Police, just after 6:30 p.m. “Our police are on the street,” said Pitoniak, “They may have used ‘stop-sticks’ to end the pursuit.”
