HIV/AIDS is a serious problem in WMass

Baystate Medical Center tested people for HIV in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield and Holyoke are consistently among the top five cities with infected men and women.

The Baystate Medical Center tested people for HIV Tuesday at the Brightwood Health Center in Springfield. More than half of those infected with HIV/AIDS are Hispanic and black.

Brian Thomas of Springfield was among the first to be tested, and got a clean bill of health. He said people shouldn’t be afraid to take the test.

“I think it’s important that you get tested every few years,” said Thomas. “To make sure you maintain your health that you’re good and people around you are good.”

On Thursday, the Baystate Medical Center’s HIV/AIDS prevention team will test Old Hill neighborhood residents from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Mason Square neighborhood Health Center.
