(NBC News) U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry journeyed to Baghdad Monday for direct talks with Iraqi leaders.
After his first round of talks Secretary Kerry promised “intense and sustained” support in Iraq’s fight against ISIS militants currently moving toward the capitol.
Kerry also made it clear that U.S. support is for a stable, democratic Iraq, not necessarily the government currently headed by controversial Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
“It has nothing to do with support for a specific government,” Kerry said.
ISIS fighters now control every border crossing into Iraq from Syria and one from Jordan.
