SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Many stray newborn kittens found a home at Dakin Humane Society on Monday. Dakin unveiled the Nicholas J. Piepul Kitten Nursery, the first of its kind in New England.
Leslie Harris, the executive director of Dakin, said hundreds of homeless kittens arrive every spring and summer, and many of them need significant nursing and extra attention. The kitten nursery will have both a professional staff and group of volunteers who work with the kittens and make sure they’re hydrated, fed, and healthy.
Harris said, “We’ve been able to reduce the homeless kitten population in our community to such a degree that we are able to allocate resources for these individual animals as they’re coming to us in an effort to save their lives.”
Harris said the goal of the nursery is to decrease the number of kitten deaths.
