Men accused of stripping copper

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Two Rhode Island men are accused of trying to steal copper off an unlikely target in Connecticut — a state police telecommunications tower.

Twenty-five-year-old John Fahey of Burrillville and 24-year-old Jeffrey Joergensen of Glocester were arraigned Wednesday in New London Superior Court on numerous charges including attempted larceny and trespassing.

State police responded to the tower in North Stonington Monday morning when an alarm went off. Troopers say they encountered Fahey and Joergensen, who claimed to work for a communications company but were actually trying to steal copper.

Authorities say the two men caused up to $10,000 worth of damage to the tower.

It’s not clear if the men have lawyers. Fahey posted bail, while Joergensen remains detained on bond. A phone number for Fahey couldn’t be found.
