(NBC News) – Same-sex married couples should be eligible for federal family leave benefits, regardless of whether they live in a state that recognizes gay marriage, according to President Obama, who’s ordering the Labor Department to present new rules on those issues.
NBC News reports on an increasing number of same sex couples are now legally saying their vows. 19 states now allow same-sex marriage, and this year alone, Federal Judges have declared gay marriage bans unconstitutional in 8 states. Now the Obama administration is expanding the rights of those couples.
Attorney Sarah Warbelow represents the LGBT community. “It’s actually a huge deal for same sex couples who are living in states that don’t recognize their marriages,” said Warbelow.
