Much of Ludlow pulling for Portugal in the World Cup

World Cup: USA vs. Portugal, Sunday 6pm

LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Much of the soccer crazed town of Ludlow will be rooting against team U.S.A. in the World Cup on Sunday.

The Americans will play Portugal.  Ludlow has a large Portuguese community.  22News went to the Lusitano Club in Ludlow where fans were watching the World Cup on Friday.  Many of them will be rooting for Portugal on Sunday, but they aren’t counting the Americans out.

“I’ve always said that USA never had the team to compete with the big dogs, but USA can fight till the end and maybe they’ll prove something,” said Mikey Martins of the Germio Lusitano Club.

Ludlow’s Leonel Marques told 22News, “If you remember in 2002, the USA beat Portugal to knock them out also.  USA is up and coming, they’ve been playing well, it should be a great game.”

USA plays Portugal, Sunday night at 6.  A team U.S.A. victory could guarantee them a spot in the knockout round if Germany defeats Ghana.
