OAK HILL, Texas (KXAN) – A would-be thief came crashing through the ceiling at the Detour neighborhood bar Tuesday afternoon.
Bar patrons were playing pool around 4 p.m. when court documents say 45-year-old Jose Gamez fell through the ceiling right next to the pool table. He was wound up in cables and had a pile of cash in his hand… $372 to be exact.
“It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Tim Shanley who witnessed the entire scenario. “Out of nowhere, the guy just fell through the ceiling. And everybody just stopped!”
Gamez landed squarely on his feet.
“After he fell down, all the money that he stole was like raining down on him,” bar owner Mike Sanchez said.
Witnesses say Gamez then walked over to the bar, put the money on the bar, and then tried to leave. But bar regulars had a different idea, and they kept him there until police arrived.
According to the court records, Gamez went into the men’s restroom and locked the door. He then climbed up through the ceiling tile and crawled over the women’s restroom above the office. Then, he crashed down into the office, grabbed the cash from a filing cabinet, and attempted to leave the same way. But, backing up over the ceiling tiles, they suddenly gave way, and he fell feet first, cash in hand, in the middle of the bar with everyone watching.
“I’m just glad, first of all, that no one was hurt. I’m thankful it wasn’t an armed robbery,” said Sanchez.
As it turns out, Gamez was already a wanted man. He had warrants out on him for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and family violence. Now, he has a burglary charge, under some rather unusual circumstances.
