World Refugee Day celebrations start in Springfield

It's celebrated all over the world

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s a festival celebrating people who escaped oppression and poverty in other countries, seeking refuge here in western Massachusetts.

More than 100 people filled Holy Name Social Center in Springfield for the start of a three day event World Refugee Day.

World Refugee Day honors the strength, courage and hope of the people who came here seeking a better life.

Kathryn Buckley-Brawner of the WMass Refugee Consortium told 22News, “All of them know that being here in western Massachusetts is one of the very best things that have happened to them in a very long time.”

Over the next three days, refugees will tell their stories though acting performances and dance. World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations in 2001.

It’s celebrated all over the world.
