NEW YORK (CNN) – The stunt had the prankster’s co-pilot and girlfriend screaming bloody murder. “Oh my god! No, no. Jack this is not right.”
A regular Volkswagen snuck from a pit lane onto the track while an actual race was in progress, even as the female passenger tried to grab the wheel to stop her boyfriend.
It happened at the Brands Hatch Circuit in Kent, England. VW Beetles were in the midst of a 4 hour race called the Fun Cup, when the gatecrasher hit the track.
The Chief Executive of the group that owns the track said, “I am extremely angry that this idiot acted in such a reckless way. He endangered the lives of the drivers racing, the marshals and his own passengers.”
The situation left the race announcer fumbling, “Uhhh errrr why is there a VW Golf on the track?” Actually, it’s a VW Polo, a model not sold in the U.S.
The racers reached speeds of up to 110 miles per hour, while the gatecrasher told the Sun he was doing 70 to 80.
The driver did get arrested. He has since been released on bail while the investigation continues.
Kent Police aren’t releasing the 21-year old man’s name, but he told the Daily Mail, “You only live once and I live every day like it’s my last.”
Officials stopped the race. Then restarted it again half an hour later; minus the interloper, who finally did as his girlfriend begged.
It takes nerve, and not the good kind, to sneak onto a racetrack and at the same time get annoyed at a bike going the wrong way.
