NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford man is facing animal cruelty charges after police said he struck a cat with an aluminum baseball bat.
According to New Bedford police, a woman was babysitting her granddaughter on Saturday afternoon when the cat scratched the young girl. The woman told police she was on the phone at the time with her ex-boyfriend, who could hear the girl crying.
The woman’s ex-boyfriend, Manuel Erinna, showed up at the apartment to “take care of the cat”.
Erinna closed the bedroom door where the young girl was when the woman heard loud banging, she told police. The cat had been struck in the head and was taken by animal control to a veterinarian.
According to officers, Erinna fled the apartment and was later located at his home and arrested for animal cruelty.
As a result of the injury, the cat lost an eye.
