CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Western Massachusetts food pantries traditionally struggle during the summer months, because fewer people donate food, but Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen in Chicopee has an abundance of food for the 40 families they provides groceries to every week.
The spring food drives conducted by the students at Chicopee High School and Chicopee Comprehensive High School resulted in more than 10,000 pounds to help fill Lorraine’s shelves.
Soup kitchen volunteers told 22News that their clients appreciate the extra food.
“We see them go out happy, they sit there waiting and when they see how much food they get, they’re very happy,” volunteer Lori Laplan said.
“There’s so many people out of work, you know, and you see a lot of fathers with their children. It’s really tough”
Lorraine’s is one of the western Massachusetts food pantries that also benefited from the Postal Workers’ annual food drive during the middle of May.
