AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – On Friday, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held in Amherst for a new affordable housing development.

HAP Housing unveiled their new Olympia Oaks development in Amherst. It’s a $12.5 million, 42 unit, energy efficient rental complex with one, two and three bedroom apartments.
The complex has garden space, a playground and a community green. A lottery of qualified applicants will determine who gets to live there.
Funding for the development came from the federal government, the state, the town, non profits, and businesses.
Congressman Jim McGovern gave 22News his impressions of the development.
“Sometimes when people talk about affordable housing they think of housing that not so nice. This is absolutely beautiful. This is in an area where there is open space and the construction is beautiful. The people who move in here are very lucky,” said McGovern.
The state has said they wanted to get all families out of homeless hotels and into other housing by the end of June.
Congressman McGovern told 22News he doesn’t know if that’s a realistic goal, but said it’s one the state can’t lose sight of.
