HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Welcome news for Chicopee and Holyoke residents. The bridge improvement work on the Willimansett Bridge is back on track.
Holyoke State Representative Aaron Vega told 22News construction resumed about 10 days ago. The work stopped for six months after the original contractor went bankrupt.
The state Department of Transportation has hired a new contractor since then. The bridge is now scheduled to reopen next summer.
Nearby businesses are now counting down the months until then.
“We just hope we get our original customers back from Chicopee and they come in once a week like they used to. Now they come in once every other months or once every six months,” said Gennaro Santaniello of Capri Pizza in Holyoke.
“It’s just been tens of thousands of dollars of lost revenue. People are going to not deal with the detour. They are going to go somewhere else,” said Aaron Vega (D) of Holyoke.
The Willimansett Bridge has been closed since 2011.
