Phone schemes continue to go around WMass

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – Police are once again warning western Mass. residents to be on alert for any phones schemes that are going around.

The Belchertown Police Department has received several reports of a phone scheme where the suspects demanded cash and threaten victim’s loved ones.

Belchertown PD said that it is easy for these calls to sound legitimate because with Google and public records, suspects can actually find the real names of your family members or friends.

If this happens to you, here are some things you can do:

  • First, stay calm; callers capitalize on a sense of fear
  • Make sure you do not give them any information
  • Try asking them questions about who they are to throw them off

To help Police catch the suspects, write down the caller’s phone number if you have Caller ID, call Police immediately, and make sure you never meet up with the caller to try and catch them.
